Blackie is a young two year old black shepherd-like mix with a soft temperament. He could very well be a mix with a Labrador. He is between 55 and 60 cms high and weighs about 25 kgs. He has a lovely thick fur and is really gentle, he is not pushy but very enthusiastic. He loves to play with other dogs, male and female.
We found him with a broken leg, he must have been in a tremendous amount of pain but he didn’t make a sound or tried to bite. He had such confidence in people, what a special dog! He has had surgery and spent a lot of time at the veterinary hospital because we did not have a place for him. The caretakers at the vets were crazy about their ‘little bear’. After a lot of time in the kennels at the small perrera we finally have a foster home for him in Spain where he can get used to being a housedog. He is really human orientated so we don’t expect any problems. He already walks off the leash, although the first couple of days he didn’t want to go of the property: he was fine just where he was!
He knows his name and comes when you call him. He loves playing with the other dogs and walks around with toys all the time- he is still a puppy in some ways, he has some catching up to do.
Now that he is getting more confident you can see his eyes and attitude change, this is wonderful to see. Now all he needs is a new home!
He is only used to life in the countryside, which is why we prefer finding him a home in a village. He is afraid of life in the city, it would take a longer time to get him used to that!
Background:
Blackie is a young dog that had his home somewhere in the Picos de Europe. He probably went wandering at one point and came across a road with a lot of traffic, near Cangas de Onis.
People that lived on the side of the road fed him at night. Unfortunately they did not confine him in any way, because there home was literally 50 m away from the road. The next morning they found him with a broken leg.
And who do you call when this happens – the police, the council- nobody cares. The people where not willing to take him to the vet themselves, even when we volunteered to cover the cost. We picked Blackie up on the 29th of December 2010, we could see he was in pain but he went with us really quietly. Unfortunately his tibia en fibula where both broken, which meant he needed extensive surgery by two surgeons to place a pin inside his leg.
We couldn’t really afford the costs, but we couldn’t leave him like that either. Fortunately we were able to let him have the surgery because he really is a delightful dog!

Ritchie is looking for a home

Ritchie looks like a boxer with longer hair on his back - probably a longhaired predecessor there somewhere as well. Probably a grifon (Spanish hunting dog) crossbreed, which accounts for his being such a softie.

Ritchie is a stable, sociable dog - he loves all people and other dogs. He loves going for a walk but gets hot very easily and then stretches out on his belly.

We think he is almost 3 years old, not very big, about 50 cm high but broad and muscular. He will never win a beauty contest but if it was a contest for inner beauty, Ritchie would be a winner! He is also definitely a one-off - there is only one Ritchie!

He is looking for a forever home with people wanting to go to dogschool with him so he can be a real housedog. He still pulls on the lead with most people except his habitual volunteer, and does not know about living in a house yet as his "home" is a cage at the small Infiesto dog shelter. Here, volunteers walk him every day so at least he does get well socialised and exercised.

He arrived at the shelter in July 2011, where his owner tied him up - wearing a welded collar which we had to cut. We have seen the same collar on our pointer Theo, so probably the same owner.

Our Clara was stolen from within the kennels of the small perrera in Infiesto Asturias - obviously someone with a key. This happened in October and now in December we still do not know what happened to her.

Cathy, shepherd/greyhound found a home

Cathy is adopted in her foster home in Spain - by me! When my other large dog Luna died in April, Cathy was there and knew Luna and was there when she passed away. So it was clear Cathy was going to stay!

Cathy is a five year old shepherd cross with the most beautiful amber eyes you can imagine and a sweet character to match those eyes. She is used to people and dogs, and may be slightly shy in the beginning but she opens up quickly. She loves to sit next to you. All the volunteers that meet her think she is absolutely wonderful.

She is a bit thin, so she will be a bit heavier once she reaches her ideal weight.

Cathy was one of three dogs abandoned by their owner in a holiday home. As she was chipped, we contacted the owner who first said he would pick them up but then never showed up. We are still in shock, especially as his dogs are such wonderful dogs.

Her friends are an older friendly Belgian shepherd crossbreed (Balint/Bliss) and a small little dog that is now adopted. When she arrived at the shelter she was hiding in the little hut as they were in a kennel with a younger, bolder and more streetwise dog. Cutty does not look for confrontation, she avoids it.

Noel, young grifon found a home

Noel found a home in the Netherlands and the family and their children are totally happy with him. He is even going to a dog school with all the family members!

Noel is a small grifon, a hunting dog with long ears. He was dumped at the perrera, barely half a year old in December 2010. He is a compact size, about 50 cm and 15-20 kg. He is a very sweet dog and loves people. As with most of the sabuesos and grifons, he hasn't got a bad bone in his body. He still has to learn about everything dogs have to learn, for which the perrera is not a good place! He gets on well with other dogs, and shares his kennel with another male dog. He would do well in a home as a second dog, cats would be no problem either. Children tend to love the long-ears, also as they are not the type of dog to snap at children when they do something they should not do.

Mandy, sabueso mix puppy found a home

Mandy has fuond a home in Germany, she will go there in the beginning of April 2011.

Mandy, an adorable and very intelligent sabuesomix did not have a very good start in life. She was rescued when only 6 weeks old and was adopted but unfortunately it did not work out - Mandy became too big and needed doggie education. She is back in her foster home now, where she is learning the ropes. She is a fast and attentive learner. She participates in the walks with the other dogs, she knows her name, she is more than eager to do "Sit" for a treat - she is as good as house trained even.

She was born beginning October 2010, she is now (Feb 2011) 4 months old and about 12 kg. She will be quite a big dog. She needs a family where she can continue learning and where she has lots of attention.

Parche, young "pirate" found a home

Parche was tied up at the perrera one fine morning, still a very young dog. The owner might have expected him to look more like a “real” boxer. Parche looks more like a pirate than a boxer, but he has the build and the non-stop enthusiastic character of a real boxer. His coat is wiry though, and a bit messy – half long in places.

Let’s face it: our pirate Parche is never going to win a beauty contest, but he makes up for that in character – and nobody will forget him as he looks like no other dog: Parche is unique!

He absolutely loves people, whether he knows them or not – a bit of attention is just great! As a young boxer type dog, he is always moving, watching what is going on, wanting attention if possible! He is in general sociable with other dogs, both male and female.

He would love to go to a house near the water as he is a real water dog. Even when the employees of the perrera clean the cages (with the dogs in them, during the week...), Parche throws himself in the water jet. He loves water – be it the river, just a water hose, it's all great fun to him.

Parche would benefit from a dog school to learn the ropes and maybe from doing a dog sport, as he is enthusiastic and eager to learn!

Puyol, young Catalan shepherd found a home

Update: Puyol travelled to a home in the Netherlands in November where he is learning that people are not so scary - in a home with another Catalan speherd and two other stable dogs. His foster mummie dedicates lots of time to Puyol and he is getting there...

Puyol is a Catalan shepherd-type of dog:

His start in life must not have been very happy, as he appeared (was dumped) at the small Infiesto perrera in July - he had an extremely matted coat and for a month managed to live on the premises outside the kennels. We had no space and did not dare to chain him up either, afraid he would get harmed. He obviously liked it there - nothing to keep him there but some attention, food and company... Eventually he came to share a kennel with Yago, a bigger dog and started to trust te volunteers who came to visit and walk them.

Puyol is about a year old with a height of 45-50 cm and a weight of 12-15 kg. He is very bright, but still quite nervous about all the new things in life.

It is difficult to see in the pictures but his eyes are beautifully almond shaped and very expressive!

Puppy and Nano found a home

Pupy was adopted in Germany in December 2010 and they are extremely happy with him. He is living with two shy galgas now and immediately made himself at home.

We are the dogs with the big feet, the long ears and the sensitive noses that want to share your couch! We absolutely love people, children too. We love to play, and also we like sleeping. We are relaxed, and promise to be good dogs if you tell us how to be good dogs.

We are about 8 months old, castrated, 55 cm/20 kg - although a bit thin they say - but healthy.

We were "dumped" at the small "perrera" in Infiesto where they had no space for us, so we just stayed around until they found a temporary solution for us, which involves a big meadow, other dogs and people to see! Still, we would love to have a home for ourselves, together or separately. Another dog in the house would be nice, or lots of dogs in the park to play with!

Golfo, grifon/sabueso puppy - found a home

Update: Golfo will be going to Germany in December 2010 where he will be adopted just over the border in France, in a loving home with a big meadow to run in and other canine friends.

Golfo is a typical example of his breed: a calm and very kind hunting dog. Grifons are obedient dogs that can be taught to walk off the leash without running away. He is an excellent pet, as he showed with the children that visit the "casa rural" (B&B) of his foster home.
He ended up at our volunteer Pedro's house recently - obviously not a good hunter and they knew about Pedro. He has no space for any additional doggie so he sleeps putside under the "horreo" (Asturian barn). At first he thought he was lost and would walk home again, but no - he just stays there…

He is still a puppy and needs education: he is not yet trained to walk on the leash or to live in a home, he can bark enthusiastically to greet you with this typical hunting dog bark. Experience with other grifon/sabueso dogs we placed (Telma in Spain and Kas, Alma in Germany) though tells us they adapt very quickly.

Lio, perro de aguas found a home

Lío is a biggish "perro de agua" pup. When he ended up at the perrera end July 2010, nicely groomed though, he had not learned anything yet. In his two foster families in Asturias he managed to learn a lot - a very active and playful dog outside, and inside the house very quiet, just loves to lie at your feet.

In November Lío went to a foster home in the Netherlands and found a new home almost straight away!

The two pictures are Lío in August at his foster family in Spain and in November just before traveling to Holland!

Pol does not understand the world anymore - in memoriam

In memoriam
Sadly, we have had to say farewell to Pol on 13 September 2010 - when he was in the veterinary clinic it turned out he had lung cancer in a very advanced state. We could only offer him a painless way to go - hasta siempre, Pol!

His owner had managed to dump the dog less than a month before by approaching an unsuspecting council worker and then disappeared - the telephone numbers and address on the documentation were not current anymore.
He did tell the dog lived in an apartment - we noticed he was a real nice boxer, used to people and very sociable. His "owner" must have known his dog was terminally ill, had we only known before ...

Suddenly he found himself tied to a cart outside the perrera, as there is no space in the perrera. Luckily we took him to the vet to be castrated - he never left the clinic after that...

He left this world for a better one, accompanied in his last moments by our vet and volunteers Pedro and María. We hope he knows at least we did love him.

Helena, young shepherd found a home

Helena is a young German shepherd mix. She is well-behaved (not counting leaving her alone in the kitchen to investigate) and gets along fine with people and other dogs of all sizes. She just wants to play and learn. She is house trained, she'll sleep in a corner and make herself invisible to she is a "good dog" - she'll lie next to you for hours in the study - to become a puppy again outside.

Helena is slowly getting used to people, she is very much attached to her foster mother but she does not yet know how to show it. She has probably had little socialisation so travelling in a car and things new are still a bit frightening.
She so desperately wants to be a good dog, she just never learned how to do that.
Helena wants to play, play, play - only the other dogs don't always appreciate that. But she gets on well with males and females, big and small. She is afraid of very overbearing dogs and will avoid any confrontation.

She is a bit rough trying to play with medium-sized 10kg dogs, smaller dogs she ignores,
She will benefit from another dog that knows how things work. She'll often find comfort tucking in behind Luna, the older shepherd mix I have.

Nerea, a tough old lady

This is Nerea, or Mrs Grumpy as we call her. She is a typical German Shepherd: she is happiest when she is lying next to you and she feels responsible for your well-being. According to the vet she is from 2002 but we think she may even be a few years older than that. She was left tied up at the perrera and she spent the first few days crying as she must have missed her owner terribly. She had puppies in the past, and was probably used for breeding as well. As she is an old dog she had quite a few breast tumours. Our first action was to have her operated to take those tumours away. 50 stitches! The biopsy has shown they are benign, which improves her chances. She has the typical wobbly hindlegs of a pedigree German Shepherd ;), which will probably only get worse, not better.

Nerea, however, is a very strong dog with a strong character. And she is absolutely devoted to 'her' people. She is obedient. She is ok with the other dogs although she can be quite bossy. She is a no-no with cats, she chases them and they will never get along.

We are looking for someone who does not mind that she is such an old granny, who does not go for too long walks - she is happiest around the house really, in a house with a garden preferably. She will be absolutely devoted to you. She loves coming for a drive in the car, even if you sometimes have to help her in. She can be with other dogs if they are sociable and relaxed, preferably male dogs or really small female dogs as she is not very sociable herself. She does not like it if other dogs are playing in "her" garden.

Kerria, labradormix looking for a home

Kerrie is an older and very friendly and quiet labradormix. She has probably been chained up as she has the typical lesions at the end of her tail from wagging her tail against a fence or similar. She is not used to other dogs, especially if they are big - but she is learning now in her foster home with 9 other dogs, where she is getting to know the rest from her kennel, a safe place for her where she sits happily in her basket. She enjoys going out for short walks several times a day, where the smaller dogs have started to accompany her. With a shoulder height of 60cm she is a large dog, but she folds herself in a corner of the basket ;) The second picture is taken 5 days later, her first "free" walk running in the woods which she thoroughly enjoyed. She now does not even mind that Helena, the young shepherd tries to play with her - Helena just gets ignored ;).
This older lady has made an incredible recovery!

Dogstrust International training course

Animales de Oriente had the opportunity to participate in the March 2010 International Training Course organised by the UK's largest charity in rehoming dogs. We enjoyed 4 days of training packed with extremely useful presentations and workshops on many topics, such as dog handling, veterinary matters, how to build a shelter (although the council here would not be amused if we suggested floor heating ;), education in primary schools, trap-neuter and release programmes for cats and dogs, fundraising and of course rehoming dogs (and cats - with a representative from Cat's Protection)

We were 17 participants from many different countries such as Portugal (our neighbours), Latvia, Cyprus, Kosovo, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and even a vet from Tanzania.

Che, a small shepherd found a home in Asturias

Che looks like a very small German shepherd – he is probably like so many dogs from the mountains of the Picos de Europa a cross with a small farm dog. His ears are floppy though and it seems as if he is always smiling due to the colouring around his muzzle. He is very young, about 1,5 years old, height 48 cm, aprox 15 kg. He has been with us since 8/2/2010.

Che is a loving but also independent dog – he is very good at agility – too good because he does not see the gate as a gate but as something to jump over as small as he is (!) and lie in the sun at the other side of the road.... he does not go anywhere, just likes to check out the perimeter of the finca... He is always late for dinner ;)

He adapts perfectly to a life inside a home – he will lie in a basket or on a chair next to you and just be quiet (if he is home that is). During the night he is ok, just sleeps in the corridor and not a sound – even in the evening if there are many dogs in the kitchen, he goes upstairs and sleeps.

He fits in perfectly with both male and female dogs as he is a survivor, not a dominant dog. Not jealous for attention, happy with any attention he can get but not demanding.

He was found by a twelve-year old boy who took him home – unfortunately his father did not agree to a dog in the house.

He is an ideal mid-size dog, not dominant and very sociable, house-trained apart from his independence at times...

Trasgu, a small black pequinese mix

Trasgu was found roaming the street - it turned out a man who could not pay his rent had left the house AND two dogs. Trasgu is a small dog with short leggies and short hair. There may be some pequinese mix in him.
He lives in a foster home now, in an apartment so he is house-trained, he loves cats, walks on the lead and travels often with his foster mother by car.
His only "bad" trait is that -as so many small dogs - he thinks he is a big dog and can be dominant towards male dogs.
Our Trasgu is such a well-socialised and loving dog that it seems strange nobody has wanted to adopt him yet!

Bola, a young terrier mix - found a home

Bola has found a home in Germany!

Little Bola is a very young dog, estimated about 10 months old. She looks like a mix between a terrier and a German shepherd, but she is only about 45 cm high and aprox. 15 kg.

We found her 28/11/09 tied up next to the perrera - as usual. She was sooo afraid! After a week she was already a lot better. She had to stay in the kennels as we had no space in our foster homes, but after her sterilisation she'll go to Pedro's house.

Bola is a very friendly dog, she gets on well with people and with other dogs. She is a calm dog and walks well on the lead. If you are talking to somebody, she'll just lie down next to you and wait until something is happening again.

Reina, boxer-sabuesomix - found a home

Reina found a home in Asturias, where they are very happy with her. She loves the little child and has already met the horse!

Reina is about 3 years old and seems to be a mix between a boxer and a sabueso. She is broad-shouldered, about 55 cm high and probably a good 25 kg - but very shy with a wonderful brown-coloured skin and incredibly friendly eyes that speak of a not very happy past.

She was found tied up to the perrera 21/11/09 - a usual occurrence. We immediately had her sterilised, one problem out of the way, also as the dear owners tend to get rid of the dogs if they see they are pregnant. Somebody else will pay for the operation...

Tommie has found a home in Zaragoza! His new family drove the 500km to ASturias to pick him up!
Tommie three weeks apart - 14/11 and 5/12. He was left near the little perrera in Infiesto, we found out he is half border collie. We think he was born in August 2009. He looks adorable and is a very active and open puppy. As a border collie mix he will need a good education. He is not in the perrera now but in a foster home in the mountains with our volunteer Mark with two other dogs. At the age of three months he weighed 5 kg and was about 25 cm high. He gets along with all other dogs, is struggling with being house-trained and defn¡initely has his own ideas - although at the same time he is very loving. He is a dog for people that can dedicate time to him and work with him so he can make use of his intelligence and need to be doing things.

Boy is a young labrador mix, maybe 1 or two years old. About 55 cm adn 20 kg. He was found in the mountains of Piloña (Asturias) together with Uma and the dogs were recognised as belonging to somebody who did not treat the dogs very well at all. Boy is a nice young dog who does not understand why he is in a cage now. He is not used to walking with a collar at all, he is afraid to move with a collar on (the first day). He is very friendly towards people and deserves a home! He is sociable with other dogs (male and female) and people.

Uma, boxer mix found a home in Switzerland

Uma is a boxer/shepherd cross, medium sized (55 cm aprox, 20 kg). She looks to be about 4 years old and may have had ligament problems with one of her back legs, which is quite stiff - according to our veterinarian volunteer. She needs to gain a bit of weight as she is very thin. She was found in the mountains with her friend Boy. Another volunteer recognised the dogs - they were usually left to their own devices by the "owner". She seems to be a friendly and quiet dog. Definitely not at home in the cages - a dog in need of a basket near the heating!

Kas, young sabueso - found a home

Kas is adopted in Germany! (March 2010)

Kas was passed on from one hunter (who treated him badly) to another (who felt sorry for him). But Kas is a pacifist - he is not a hunter. So Kas had to go...
He is a young and very friendly Sabueso/grifon. They are the big-eared dogs that make ideal pets: he is not dominant, likes people and other dogs, loves to come for a walk, he is not inclined to run off at all. Sabuesos are very calm dogs.
Kas was born in 2007, he weighs 22 kg and is about 50 cm high. A bit rough on the edges still but considering the life he's had, he is incredibly stable and well-tempered. Suitable for any kind of family!

Amaia, a young German shepherd ADOPTED

Amaia is less than a year old and she was found near the perrera - nobody asked for her. Maybe she was abandoned because her back legs are not 100% perfect, although the running here does her good. She is a very intelligent and loving animal. She is a born retriever and never leaves your side. She is agile, jumps up and down like a lunatic when she is enthousiastic and sociable with all the (9) other dogs.

Gris, a small young German shepherd - ADOPTED

Gris had been adopted in January 2009 - he was just a puppy really and was returned (financial crisis?) just before August (summer holidays?). He is a handsome and very nice, active dog. He still needs to learn a lot and he needs to gain some weight. He is absolutely nice, and not a dominant dog at all.
More info in German - adopted in Germany November 2009. His name is now Bino.

Solchi - Young Pointer mix - found a home

Solchi found a home in Germany with another pointer!

Solchi is 1.5 years old and Sella's brother. He was adopted a year ago but due to the owner's personal sitation he is back at Pedro's house now. Solchi is a very active, elegant pointer mix. He is thinner than a pointer, we think there is some setter in him as well. Aisha, now adopted at the donkey paradise, is most probably his mother. He is very sociable with other dogs, both male and female and loves people. As an active dog he will need a place where he can run a lot - also because he is still so very young.

Milou, fox terrier - old but so what - ADOPTED

Little Milou was found hiding under a truck. The metal ring on his collar was broken and he had obviously been on the end of a chain. He is a bit small and harmless to be chained up.... Milou gets on well with all the other dogs, cats and people. He loves lying in the car and prefers a quiet life. If the other 8 dogs are too noisy, he goes and hides in a corner, preferably in the van.

The vet estimates his age around 8 years - there's a lot of life in him yet. He jumps up and over the walls without any effort. He has a slight heart murmur but no problems with that.

Milou has found a home in Germany in a family with two other older dogs!

Cloë, German Shepherd ADOPTED

Update: Clöe is adopted in Spain.

Cloë is probably just over one year old. As many other dogs, she was tied up at the perrera on 24 Nov 2008 by people unknown, so we don't know anything about her past. She is slightly lower (50-55 cm) than other German shepherds, she is not too fat at all, her hair is not long, rather short and she weights 23 kg. She is sterilised (15 Dec 2008).

She is used to people but is a little skittish and afraid of brooms - she must have been beaten before. On the other hand she is very investigative and incredibly active. She is in a fosterhome now and the whippet only just managed to wear her out running. She gets on well with the other dogs, she can be slightly dominant towards females but if there is sufficient space to run around there are no problems at all.

She has not been educated but she does come when she is called and joins the walks with the other dogs from day one without taking off on her own. She likes playing with a ball but what she enjoys most at the moment is just running around and inviting other dogs to do the same. She has only been with us for three days so there will be more to tell about her.

Chico is a young dog with a very expressive face - just like his character. He wants to participate, is enthousiastic, can be a good leader if there are several dogs. He absolutely adores people who will have to guide him to channel all his energy as he is very intelligent and does not easily give up.

He loves to play and is good with children.

He is no good with cats, but on the other hand he is very reliable around horses and donkeys.

He knows how to walk on the lead, enjoys travelling by car and knows several basic commands.

Chico is about 50-55 cm, what we call medium-sized, much smaller than a German Shepherd. He is castrated, chipped, vaccinated and ready to find a a new home with someone to love him.

Aisha - setter mix ADOPTED March 2009

Aisha is a dog who gets on extremely well with all the other dogs and with people. She is not afraid, she is independent but also loves attention. She has even learnt to get on with the cats! She is not a barker, only when she gets excited just before the daily walk in her fosterhome.

She is aprox 3 years old, shoulderheight about 50 cm. Medium sized. The ideal companion for older or younger people. She is obedient, will not leave your side which is admirable for a hunting dog.

Six puppies found a new home

Six puppies, the mother is a medium sized mix of many breeds ;) and daddy may have been a labrador.
Within a week they have all found a new home, where they will be going by the end of October 2008.

Sella - young, active and elegant found a home

Sella was adopted in March as a puppy -now we know Aisha she must have been their mother, dumped at the perrera a few months later than the first four puppies. She lived in Oviedo for a while, so she is educated as a real city dog. Due to personal reasons she came back to us and is looking for a home. She is about 8 months old now and a sleek, active and very loving dog. She gets on well with people, other dogs and cats. She is obedient and just loves being with people.

Aika - the lovely terrier girl found a home

Aika is a small foxterrier, very young and probably pure as she has a cut tail. She was found somewhere in the woods, where she was found and taken home - but the problem was that lovely Aika also loved chicken, as a real terrier and she was dumped at the small perrera in Infiesto.

Character: loving and dependent on people, open to new people - in that respect not terrier-like. She does like to hunt birds (chickens ;) - cats are incredibly interesting (there are about 10 in her foster home) but they are al most as big as she is. She is not used to them yet though. She is house-trained and obedient but a very very active little dog.
